Product Description
Calcium specific chelator and indicator. Upon binding calcium there is a shift in the UV spectrum and an enhancement of fluorescence. QUIN 2 was a member of the first generation of Ca2+ chelators introduced by Tsien in 1980. These chelators have backbones similar to that of EGTA (ethylenglycol-bis(β-aminoethyl)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid) and, like EGTA, they are able to chelate Ca2+ with high affinity and specifity. Moreover, these molecules contain aromatic rings that interact electronically and sterically with the chelating backbone. Thus chelation results in changes in the UV-absorbing and fluorescing properties of the molecules. The resulting spectral changes allow these substances to be used as very sensitive probes for Ca2+ ions, Ca2+ concentrations in single cells of various types can be measured for the first time! TPEN (Prod. No. ALX-450-011) can be used in conjunction with QUIN 2 to reduce heavy-metal quenching of QUIN 2 fluorescence in cells.
