Immunological and pathobiological roles of fibulin-1 in breast cancer: S.M. Pupa, et al.; Oncogene 23, 2153 (2004) Abstract
General Information
The fibulins are a family of secreted glycoproteins that are components of elastic matrix fibers and basement membranes. Fibulin-1 is an extracellular matrix protein, which can adhere to endothelial cells and regulate their motility and proliferation. Fibulin-1 is overexpressed in estrogen receptor (ER)-positive ovarian carcinomas and several studies suggest a possible role for fibulin-1 as a tumor suppressor. Xie et al. described that fibulin-1 inhibits tumor growth in HT1080 cell lines by suppressing tumor angiogenesis and inducing apoptosis.

General Information
RUNX (Runt-related transcription factor) family members play important roles in normal developmental processes and carcinogenesis. Of the three known RUNX family members, the ubiquitously expressed RUNX3 is involved in neurogenesis, T cell differentiation, tumorigenesis and is a component of the TGF-β induced tumor suppressor pathway. In gastric cancer cells, RUNX3 induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis through upregulation of Bim, a proapoptotic BH3-only protein. In addition, RUNX3 is frequently inactivated in gastric cancer cells.

SEL1L expression decreases breast tumor cell aggressiveness in vivo and in vitro: R. Orlandi, et al.; Cancer Res. 62, 567 (2002) Abstract; Full Text
General Information
SEL1L (suppressor of lin-12-like protein) is the human ortholog of the C. elegans sel-1 gene, a negative regulator of the lin-12/Notch family of proteins. Human SEL1L is a component of endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD), involved in ubiquitin-dependent degradation of misfolded ER proteins. In addition, SEL1L plays a role in cancer progression. Several studies provided significant evidence that increased SEL1L expression is linked to a decrease in tumor aggressiveness.
